4-party enforces hartal in 3 Sylhet upazilas


A half-day hartal was observed yesterday in three thanas under Sylhet-2 constituency protesting attack on former BNP lawmaker M Ilyas Ali and demanding arrest of the attackers.

Four-party Alliance enforced the hartal in Balaganj, Biswanath and Osmaninagar thanas.

Alliance leaders announced a four-day agitation programme at a press conference held at Osmaninagar in the afternoon.

The programmes include demonstration and rally in the three thanas today, agitation programme at union level tomorrow, submission of memorandums to UNOs in the upazilas Wednesday and handing over of memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) on Thursday.

Osmaninagar thana BNP president Mainul Haque Chowdhury read out a statement at the conference.

Earlier, gunshots were fired on Saturday from a microbus towards the jeep of Ilyas Ali, only 100 yards away Osmaninagar thana on the Dhaka- Sylhet highway. He was on way back to Sylhet city after attending a pre-election rally at Sadipur However, Ilyas and his companions were unhurt.

Soon after the incident, supporters of the BNP lawmaker blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway. A procession was brought out in the city Saturday night. A protest rally was held in the Court Para area in the city.

Sylhet City Corporation ward commissioner and former vice-president of Sylhet city BNP Abdul Quaiyum Jalali Ponki chaired the rally.
