Despite several anti-crime drives and death of at least 20 Janajuddho cadres in 'crossfire' in Jhenidah this year, there is no sign of let up in killings and attacks by the outlawed party in six upazilas of the district. In their latest operation, district Jubo Dal organising secretary Haider Ali Hadu was shot dead after bomb attack. Police and witnesses said, a gang of eight armed men ambushed Hadu at Adarsha Para on the night of December 1 when he was returning home. They opened fire on Hadu after hurling two bombs. After a while, one Razib introducing himself as a 'regional leader' of Janajuddha faction of Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) called some local journalists over cell and claimed that his party was responsible for the murder. The killings allegedly by outlaws panicked local leaders of BNP and its fronts. At least seven of them have recorded general diary with police and sought security. Local BNP held a rally at Post Office Square in Jhenidah town on Saturday protesting administration's alleged failure in maintaining law and order. They will bring out a mourning procession today, form a human chain and submit memorandums to the Deputy Commissioner and the Police Superintendent on Wednesday. The programmes were announced at a press conference held at Jhenidah Press Club on December 7. At the press conference, senior BNP leaders claimed that several party men were killed by outlaws in the district in recent months. Those who filed GD include Jhenidah Poura BNP president and pourashabha chairman Abdul Malek; victim Hadu's brother and district BNP treasurer Aktaruzzaman; Poura BNP secretary Abdul Majid; district Jubo Dal president Zahiduzzaman Mona; district Chhatra Dal president Ashraful Islam Pintu and its secretary Asif Iqbal Makhan and Porahati Union Parishad member Abdul Alim. On October 7, three people including Jhenidah Sadar thana Jubo Dal office secretary Lutfar Rahman Shanto were killed by outlaws at around 11 am when he was reading newspaper sitting in front of a shop at Chandipur Bazaar. Later, one Dipok Roy talked to journalists on cellphone on behalf of Janajuddho and claimed responsibility for the murder. In the same evening, armed gangs of Janajuddho slaughtered and shot dead two others near a canal in Thokepara village in Harinakundu upazila. They were identified as Sagar, 22 and Altaf, 30 of Parbotipur village. One Rahul Raj claimed that Janajuddha cadres killed them as they were 'anti-social elements'. On October 5, outlaws killed farmer Mahabul, 25, of Shailkupa upazila. On September 28, Jhantu Mian, a member of Daulatpur Union Parishad in Harinakundu was shot dead. Soon after, one Akkas introducing himself as a 'regional commander' of Janajuddho claimed that Jhantu was killed as he was a police informer. The armed outfit carried out at least 31 incidents of bomb attack in the district in two years and eight months since from February 2004, killing at least 6 people including an ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector) of police and injuring 36 others, according to data available from police, intelligence agencies, newspaper reports and 'Janajuddho leaflets'. Of the bomb attacks, eight took place in 2006, 12 in 2005 and the rest 11 in 2004. Janajuddho claimed responsibility for most of the bomb attacks. Police and intelligence sources claimed that Janajuddho operatives are sheltered by big political parties. "Most of the outlawed outfits are sheltered by the two major political parties to use its cadres in the coming parliamentary election", a top police official in Jhenidah said seeking anonymity. At least 25 special drives including 'Operation Clean Heart' and 'Operation Spider Web' were launched in South-Western districts including Jhenidah. But most of the drives turned futile due to leakage of information ahead of drives, law enforcers claimed. When contacted over cell phone, Jhenidah Police Superintendent Allah Box Chowdhury declined to make any comment in this connection as he joined only a few days back.
