45 hurt as locals, Al-Baiyenat men clash in Sirajganj

At least 45 people were injured in a clash between the activists of Al-Baiyenat, an Islamist organisation, and locals in the district town yesterday afternoon.Of the injured, 25 were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and private clinics while others released after first aid. Police and locals said some 200 to 250 activists of Al-Baiyenat, led by its leader Pir Zillur Rahman Rajarbagi, came here from Dhaka on December 6 to conduct their organisational activities. They have been staying at Hotel Pubali in the town. Yesterday, the activists of the Islamist outfit beat up three students of Jamiul Ulema Qawmi Madrasa after a meeting at Bazar Station crossing at around 4:00pm and then took out a procession in the town with sticks in hands. At one stage, local people, including businessmen and political activists, swooped on the Al -Baiyenat men, leading to a fierce clash between the two sides. The warring groups chased each other and hurled brickbats during the clash that continued for two hour. Al-Baiyenat activists also ransacked six shops in the town. Police charged batons and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the town.
