Yunus leaves for Oslo to receive prize


Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus yesterday left Dhaka for the Norwegian capital Oslo to receive the most prestigious award at an official ceremony tomorrow.

Grameen Bank board member and borrower Taslima Begum will represent the bank that has been leading the way in the field of microcredit across the globe. She will jointly receive the prize with Dr Yunus, said a press release.

Yunus and the Grameen Bank share this year's Peace Prize. They have been awarded for their "efforts to create economic and social development from below".

Dr Yunus, who has pioneered the use of microcredit in combating poverty, is leading a 79-member team including six grassroots level women who have successfully utilised the loans taken from the Grameen Bank.

Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Channel i will telecast the official Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony live from the Oslo City Hall, Norway between 6:00pm and 7:25pm Bangladesh time. The ceremony will also be webcast live at nobelprize.org.

The founder of Grameen Bank, Yunus will deliver his Nobel Lecture at a ceremony to be attended by current and former heads of state and global political leaders. Later in the evening, the delegates will join him at the banquet to be hosted by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in honour of the Peace Prize laureates.

For the first time in its history, the King and the Queen of Norway will attend the banquet.

The following day, Prof Yunus will attend a concert planned to celebrate this year's Peace Prize laureates. Hollywood luminaries Sharon Stone and Anjelica Huston will present the concert that will feature among others Yusuf Islam (the former Cat Stevens), Lionel Richie, Simply Red, Monica Yunus and Nrityanchal.

Bangladeshi expatriates in Norway will also organise a programme where the award ceremony will be screened live for the audience who will not be able to attend the ceremony.

Dr Yunus will also travel to Sweden and Denmark. In addition, he will visit England and France to attend a number of receptions in his honour including by the ones by Prince Charles on December 14 and French President Jacques Chirac on December 16.

Yunus has a hectic schedule till Dec 19. Besides meeting kings, presidents and prime ministers in Europe, he will deliver lectures and give interviews, seeking to focus on the rural credit system that he has pioneered and give the Europeans a view of the developing world.

On December 12, he will leave for Sweden where he will attend a banquet with the other Nobel Prize winners at the Nobel Museum. He will also take part in the historic signing ceremony there.

On December 13, he will meet the Swedish King and political leaders, attend a luncheon and a press conference with the Swedish international development minister. Besides, he will attend a reception to be accorded by the Bangladeshi community in Sweden.

The 2006 Nobel Peace laureate will travel to Denmark on December 14 to address the biennial national speech organised by the Danish Council for Development.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, his wife Cherie Blair, UK chancellor of the treasury and the Bank of England governor are also scheduled to meet Yunus during his stay in London.

Baroness Paula Uddin of Bethnal Green will accord a reception to Dr Yunus on December 15 at the British Parliament where the leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, is expected to attend.

The Bangladeshi community in London has arranged a reception for him on December 15.

Professor Yunus will travel to France on December 16. There he will attend a reception in his and Grameen Bank's honour by French President Jacques Chirac. Yunus and Chirac will jointly hold a press conference after the reception.

After the prize-giving ceremony on December 10, which is also the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize, Yunus will participate in a live interactive session with the CNN.

Dr Yunus is scheduled to give a number of interviews to the global media including one to the BBC on December 9.

He will appear on Britain's TV programme News Night, and will be interviewed by British newspapers The Sunday Telegraph, The Times, and France's Le Monde.

His family, Grameen Bank board members, officials and borrowers are accompanying him on the trip.

He will return to Dhaka on December 19.
