Polls won't be free and fair under present CEC
SCBA leaders tell EU mission
Staff Correspondent
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) leaders yesterday told the visiting European Union (EU) Observation Exploratory Mission that the next general election would not be free and fair under Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice MA Aziz and the probable chief adviser of the caretaker government, justice KM Hasan. They stressed that reforms in the Election Commission and the caretaker government system are a must for a free and fair election. The CEC has lost his credibility by violating the high court order and preparing the updated voter list on his own way, the SCBA leaders said while exchanging views with EU mission member Hannah Roberts, a legal expert on election, at the SCBA conference hall. The leaders said that the government has appointed two election commissioners to manipulate the election results. The government has also extended the retirement age limit of judges only to make the then Chief Justice KM Hasan the chief adviser of the caretaker government, they added. Hannah Roberts, however, did not make any comments to reporters after the meeting. M Aminuddin, general secretary of SCBA, eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Advocate Baset Majumder, Ozayer Faruq, Enayetur Rahim, Basir Ahmed and Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury were present in the meeting.
