PM, Hasina shocked at loss of lives


Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and opposition leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed deep shock at the loss of lives and property in sudden storms over the Bay on Tuesday night.

In a condolence message, the prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and expressed her sympathy for the bereaved families.

She directed the authorities concerned to expedite the rescue operation for those still missing and provide adequate treatment for the injured.

The prime minister also directed the local administration in coastal areas to extend "all-out cooperation and provide relief for the affected people".

She also urged the leaders and workers of the BNP and its front organisations to stand by the affected people and extend cooperation to local administration in relief operation.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) kept round-the-clock contact with the local administration in coastal areas to monitor the latest situation.

Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina expressed her deep shock at the loss of lives in sudden storms over the Bay.

In a separate message, she alleged many people died due to indifference and failure of the government. "If the government was sincere and gave the warning timely, such deaths could be averted, she said.

She prayed for salvation of the departed souls and expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families.
