Mine matters

Your Dinajpur correspondent's report (DS: May 28) on the misadventure of the Energy Adviser trapped inside the Barapukuria coal mine is the example of colossal mess in a vital energy resource sector.

The Gen-Sets of the mine which should take on full load at most in thirty seconds; did not even start! The other area of concern is the absence of life support safety systems. It is astonishing that the Energy Adviser went down about 1900 feet into the mine shaft without adequate air supply support system ! One wonders why the lift does not have an independent flexible air supply along with its lifting ropes to provide outside air to the lift at least?

These dangerous (one might even say murderous) omissions are things beyond normal comprehension! The only brighter side of this whole episode is that the Energy Adviser now knows everything first hand. He cannot put back the clock; only clean and polish it.

Nevertheless, something is better than nothing. As the saying goes "There is a silver lining to every dark cloud". Hopefully, this time the proverb may come right.
