Attack on journalists
Rosaline Costa, Human Rights Advocate, Hotline Human Rights Bangladesh
We are observing very brutal and inhuman activities of the police these days. We are ashamed of such brutal, barbaric attack on the journalists who are our voice for the voiceless and the conscience of the nation. We strongly condemn the attack on the journalists by the armed cadres and goons guarded by the police. The intolerance, brutalities, barbarism of police and BNP cadres towards the people, especially towards the press, are going beyond limits. Apparently, their behaviours prove that they are anti-people and want to save the corrupt administration or people in power. Journalists are the voice and conscience of the people who cannot be heard by others. The recent incident in Kushtia has made it clear that the attackers were hired goons of the local BNP lawmaker and district JCD cadres who caused injuries to more than 25 journalists, one critically. The government and the ruling party lawmakers along with their supporters and activists always blamed the journalists for destroying the 'image' of the country and requested them to publish positive news only. But now it is evident who is destroying the image. Only the BNP-Jamaat and the ruling party members, activists and supporters are satisfied with the achievements of this BNP-Jamaat coalition government. Today, when the whole world can see through Internet what is happening in our country, the government, like a ostrich in the desert, wants to blame the opposition, journalists, social workers, civil society and secular minded progressive people for all its failures. I, on behalf of my organisation Hotline Human Rights Bangladesh, strongly condemn the attack on the journalists and sympathise with the victims.
