Summer vacation at DU

Dhaka University (DU) is going to be closed soon due to its scheduled academic summer vacation, which usually starts from the very first day of June. And the duration is one month as I have been witnessing in the last four years while studying here. During vacation no class is held, though some exams are held. In my opinion, that is one and only positive outcome of such a long break. But I have never understood the logic behind it. Does a student need 30 days of summer vacation to enjoy it fully ?

It is the year for the ruling party to quit power. If everything goes accordingly, they will handover power to the caretaker government in October this year. And the academic activities will suffer a lot before and after the handover of power and during the tenure of the interim government, as we have seen in 1996 and 2001. Hartal, strike and violence dominate the campus , as they always dominated in the recent past.

I think a maximum of 10 to 15 days' break is enough to enjoy the summer. Thus DU can save 15 days. And a day saved is a day earned. An academic day is very important for an educational institution like DU. It is not a matter of how many classes and exams are being held. Whatever the number is, it does make a difference. It will help the authorities reduce session jam to some extent.
