Naushad
SN Mamoon, Dhaka
With the death of legendary Naushad Ali, the Bombay film industry became poorer. Naushad moved to Bombay from Lucknow in the thirties to become a musician. He could play many musical instruments. He served as an assistant to music director Khemchand Prakash of Mahal fame. Naushad Ali shot into fame in 1944 in film 'Rattan". He also gave break to Rafi and corrected his heavily Punjabi accented Urdu. Most of Naushad's songs were based on UP folk tunes and light classical.A good songwriter or lyricist is an essential component for a good music director. Lyricist like Sahir Ludhianvi, Shakeel Badauni, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Hasrat Jaipuri, Sailendra, Anand Bakshi, Pradeep, SH Bihari, Neeraj, Janisar Akhter, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Rajendra Singh Bedi etc. penned the beautiful melodious poetic songs and music directors like Naushad, SD Burman, Anil Biswas, C. Ramchandra, Madanmohan, GM Durrani, Sajjad, GM Mohammad, Jaidev set tune to them. They produced immortal songs in tandem. With the death of the above named lyricists Bollywood is left with only two lyricists of repute- Gulzar and 'overworked' Javed Akhter, son of Janisar Akhter. The rest are simply 'Bakhwas" and not 'edible'. So, real good poetic songs are hard to be heard now. Music directors like Naushad must be happy to be dead in this era of 'remix music'.
