Public transport
Engr. Hafizur Rahman Arman, East Bashabo, Dhaka
The boom in public transport in the capital city is a good sign for relieving the ever-increasing traffic congestion. The city dwellers are welcoming such changes. However, there are a few problems that need to be solved so that the initiative is kept alive. Firstly, the fare is not fair at all.The passengers are overcharged. For instance, from Jatrabari to Malibagh rail-crossing there are eight bus stoppages with ticket booths, but if one gets onboard a bus at Saidabad and get off at next stoppage, Maniknagar, s/he is compelled to pay the full fare fixed for journeying from Jatrabari to Malibagh. Similar examples abound. The transport companies have their ticket booths with more than one employee at each stoppage. So why no tickets for smaller distances? If a train stops at Comilla station then why should I buy ticket for Chittagong while going from Dhaka to Comilla? Moreover, the CNG-buses are still charging as much as the diesel-buses. As the fuel price is unstable worldwide there is always a chance of increased fare and overcharging will definitely worsen the situation further. Secondly, the buses are painted with colourful advertisements of cell phone or cement companies . The public buses should carry the origin-destination in details and the route number should be conspicuous. This trend of carrying advertisements is creating confusion among the passengers, especially during rush hours. Some pallid buses with "Body To-let" written on it may cause laughter to many. Finally, so many companies with so many buses operating on the same route with so many stoppages are causing frequent lane changing and thus creating problems for other road users in the form of delay and accidents. Separate guidelines in this regard are urgently required. Hope the authorities will come up with solutions and nurture the positive trend of the city dwellers' getting adapted with the public transport system.
