Jatiya Chhatra Dhara, student wing of Gono Forum, urged the government to give top priority to the education sector in the upcoming budget for 2006-2007 fiscal years. Terming a budget as 'vision document' of a country's future development, Chhatra Dhara leaders put forward a nine-point demand at a press conference at Modhur Canteen in Dhaka University yesterday ahead of the budget declaration in the National Parliament. Condemning the second highest budget allocation in defence sector, Chhatra Dhara leaders said expenses in defence sector must be reduced and surplus budget should be allocated for the development of different social sectors. They demanded more than five per cent of GDP to be allocated in the education sector and governmental subsidy to be increased for educational materials. They demanded establishing modern ICT Village at the public universities, ICT centres at residential halls for the students so that they can get access to the world of information and technology. Chhatra Dhara President Monjur Ahammad, General Secretary Mohammad Jakinur Rahman Pikul, Organising Secretary Mohammad Aiyubur Rahman and DU unit Chhatra Dhara President Abu Sufian were present at the press conference.
