Unrest in RMG Sector
'Tackle situation thru' discussions'

Expressing concern over the increased discontent of garment workers and huge loss of properties, Karmojibi Nari urged the government, owners and workers to tackle the situation through discussions.

At a press conference yesterday, President of Karmojibi Nari Shirin Akhter said a tripartite meeting was held to meet the lawful demands of workers and decisions were taken in this regard, but the anguish among the workers was not reduced, rather it has enhanced.

The speakers also urged the government to take necessary steps to implement the decisions taken at the tripartite meeting and investigate why the EPZ authorities have failed to reduce the discontent of workers.

They said there should not be any scope for presumption where the country's image and economy and workers' rights are involved.

The speakers said no pressurised or provoked steps could solve the problem, it rather needs democratic approach.

They said the unwanted situation between the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authorities and the workers could not prevail if trade unionism was allowed in this sector.

The speakers urged the owners and investors to continue production and implement all contracts with the workers without taking any punitive measures.

They also urged the workers to maintain discipline in the factories and retain their jobs by maintaining production there.

Meanwhile, they can continue their bargaining with the owners and the government systematically.

Rokeya Rafik Baby, Ziaul Haque, Mahmuda Imam and Arifa Akhter of the organisation were present on the occasion.
