Hasina to receive Mother Teresa Award on June 24

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will receive the prestigious Mother Teresa International Award on June 24 at a function at the Centenary Hall of the Kolkata University in Kolkata.Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of UPA government of India, is likely to ceremonially hand over the award to Hasina. Former Indian Prime Minister VP Singh and the governors of West Bengal and Tripura are scheduled to be present at the function. Hasina, also leader of the 14-Party opposition combine, is expected to leave for Kolkata on June 23 and return home on June 25. Kolkata-based Mother Teresa Foundation nominated Hasina for the award in recognition of her contributions to the struggle for peace and harmony. Indian High Commissioner Veena Sikri conveyed the decision to Hasina at her Sudha Sadan residence on June 2. Earlier, Mother Teresa International Awards were presented to renowned personalities like former Chief Minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu, late King Mahendra of Nepal, US senator Hillary Clinton and former Prime Minister of India late Rajiv Gandhi. The 5th and 6th Mother Teresa International Awards will be presented this year to former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela and jointly to late Lady Diana of UK and Prof. Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh.
