Attack on Journos in Kushtia
Punishment to Shahidul, cadres demanded


Journalists demanded exemplary punishment to BNP lawmaker Shahidul Islam MP and his cadres for the recent attack on a journalists' rally in Kushtia.

They placed their four-point demands at a protest rally organised by Sangbadik-Sramik-Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SSKOP) at the National Press Club in the city yesterday protesting attack on journalists in Kushtia that left a number of journalists including the Bangladesh Observe Editor Iqbal Sobahan Chowdhury injured.

The leaders threatened that they would go for tougher movements including strike in newspaper industry if their demands are not met by June 14.

They also urged the government to realise their demands for the greater interest of the press freedom.

Referring to the police action on journalists in Chittagong, SSKOP leaders urged the government to make public the judicial inquiry commission report.

They also demanded removal of the police officers responsible for the attack and take legal measures against them.

They demanded compensation for the injured journalists as well as damage of their valuables as per report of the inquiry committee.

SSKOP Coordinator Mozammael Haque presided over the rally where The Observer Editor Iqbal Sobahan Chowdhury, SSKOP Co-conveners Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Fazle Imam, Member Secretary Ruhul Amin Gazi, Joint Member Secretaries Abdul Jalil Bhuyian and Motiur Rahman Talukder, members Abul Hashem, Mohammad Kairul Islam and Altaf Mahmud, Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) General Secretary Akhtaruzzaman Khan and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote (SSJ) General Secretary Golam Kuddus also addressed.

After the rally, a protest procession was brought out from the National Press Club.

The procession paraded the streets in front of the High Court, Topkhana and Paltan Crossing.

Meanwhile, our correspondent in Manikganj adds: Manikganj Press Club and district unit of Bangladesh Journalists Association brought out a procession and a held a rally in the town protesting attack in journalists.
