Reyna fit for Czechs

U.S. captain Claudio Reyna will be fit to face the Czech Republic in the World Cup on June 12, coach Bruce Arena said on Saturday.

Arena told reporters at the U.S. team hotel that midfielder Reyna "fully participated" in training, as did midfielder John O'Brien who is working to gain match fitness after playing only sporadically since the 2002 finals.

"I think he's really going to be ready on June 12," said Arena of the opening fixture of the U.S. World Cup campaign when they meet the Czech Republic in Gelsenkirchen.

"Claudio's like a fine wine," Arena said. "He gets better with age. He'll be more prepared for this World Cup than the last one and he knows that this is one of his last great opportunities as a player."

Manchester City's Reyna injured a hamstring on May 23 in a friendly against Morocco. He has not played since.

This is the fourth finals for Reyna, 32, who has won 109 caps and scored eight goals.

Reyna was in the 1994 team but did not play due to injury. Four years later, he made little impact as the U.S. lost all three matches and managed to score only once as they finished last in the 32-nation field.

In December, he had surgery for a broken ankle and then three games into his return in March, suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for several weeks.

"He (Reyna) came into training camp this season pretty fit," said Arena. "He played pretty actively over the last month and a half of the season, so he's close to being match fit."

Arena did not indicate if he planned to play Reyna on Monday when the U.S. have a closed-door friendly against fellow finalists Angola in Hamburg.

The U.S. continue their Group E campaign against Italy on June 17 in Kaiserslautern before wrapping up their first round on June 22 with first-timers Ghana in Nuremburg.

In 13 World Cup matches against Europeans, the U.S. have lost nine times while managing only three victories and a draw. But playing in Europe against Europeans at the finals, they have lost all seven encounters by a 20-4 aggregate.
