Parreira vows gung-ho approach

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira confirmed Saturday that he will adopt an all-out attack approach at the World Cup in Germany.

Parreira stated he would put his faith in his famous "magic foursome" as the samba stars bid for a record sixth title in the June 9 to July 9 showpiece.

Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Kaka, who between them play for four of the biggest club sides in Europe - respectively Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan - will spearhead the team in an attacking formation.

Forwards Ronaldo and Adriano will lead the front line with Ronaldinho and Kaka as pulling the strings behind them and rampaging full-backs Roberto Carlos and Cafu providing width.

To compensate, central midfielders Emerson and Ze Roberto will provide cover for Brazil's two centre-backs.

"The situation is very simple," said Parreira. "Our priority is to attack, we have great players for this. It is clear I will have some problems but we hope to solve those together during the World Cup."

One problem he might have is the aging and tiring legs of full-backs Roberto Carlos and Cafu, whose lung-busting breaks up and down the flanks play an important role in Brazil's approach.

Roberto Carlos has admitted that at the grand old age of 33, three years younger than Cafu, he can no longer run like he did 10 years ago.

"Experience means that now I think more and support the attack at the right moment, without exposing the defence. That has evolved over time," said Roberto Carlos.

"Now I pick my moments better than when I used to run more. In 2002 I went forward at just the right times. If I can manage to do that again, it will be perfect.

"Now I support the attack less but when I do it is to cross for a goal or indeed to score a goal myself.

"I don't run up the pitch 15 times to support the attack only to send crosses into the goalkeeper's hands."

Brazil left their Weggis base Saturday to an ovation and the presentation of gifts from the local townsfolk.

The hotel where they stayed also auctioned off a night in the rooms used by their star players, the magic foursome and Roberto Carlos, with that of Ronaldo fetching the highest sum, 1,010 Swiss francs (835 dollars).

As a parting gesture, Parreira gave a cheque for 3,200 francs (2,650 dollars) to the hotel to be donated to a humanitarian organisation.
