Change in wage commission
Tripartite meet decides

A tripartite meeting between the government, garment workers and the garment owners yesterday decided to change representation in the wage commission formed earlier to help resolve the ongoing crisis.

As per a decision of the meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat with State Minister for Labour and Employment Amanullah Aman, the government will withdraw Nazma Akhtar from the Wage Board.

Nazma Akhtar, a representative of a faction of the garment workers, was appointed as member of the Wage Board earlier.

Other agitating worker groups raised objection to her appointment and demanded her withdrawal from the Board alleging she was not appointed in consultation with them.

A new member replacing Nazma Akhtar will be appointed as representative of the garment workers to the Wage Board.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Commerce Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdullah Al Noman, BGMEA President Tipu Munshi, BKMEA President Fazlul Haque, and Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad leaders Wazedul Islam, Mohammad Shahidullah and Shirin Akhtar attended the meeting.

The meeting also decided from today all the garment factories outside the Dhaka Export Processing Zone would remain open and urged the garment workers to resume work.

It endorsed the proceedings of the tripartite meeting held on June 1 and decided to immediately implement the decisions of the meeting.
