11 killed in Jessore bus accident

Eleven people were killed on the spot and about 40 others were injured in a fatal road crash at Mandartala on Jessore-Jhenidah road, some 15 km off Jessore town, early yesterday.The accident occurred when the driver of a Bagerhat-bound bus lost control and the vehicle hit a roadside tree at around 4:40am. Of the dead, five were identified as Rukans (leaders) of Jamaat-e-Islami. They are Moulana Abdul Aziz, 38, Moulana ABM Rafiquzzaman, 38, Moulana Abdul Gaffar, 40, Mustain Billah, 55, and Moulana Abdul Haq Akand, 38. They hail from Batiaghata, Rupsha and Sonadanga of Khulna. They were returning home after attending the Rukan conference in Dhaka. Other five were identified as supervisor of the bus Main Uddin, 30, of Dumuria, Khulna, driver of the bus Khokon, 45, of Jessore town, Ranu Bibi, 45, of Bikrampur of Dhaka, her grand-daughter Rupa, 6 and Monirul Islam, 35 of Batiaghata upazila in Khulna. The identity of a male of about 45 years could not be known. The injured were admitted to the Jessore General Hospital and Kaliganj Health Complex. The survivors alleged that the bus driver was speeding. The bus started for Gagerhat from Gabtali bus terminal at around 9:40pm on Saturday with 56 passengers. Soon after the incident, locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the victims. Some of them, however, were engaged in looting, the injured passengers alleged.
