Trial held up as complainant seeks further investigation

Trial of former finance minister SAMS Kibria killing case could not be resumed yesterday in the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal following a petition filed by the complainant for further investigation into the case.The trial judge Biplob Goswami, however, fixed today for order on the petition. Complainant of the case Advocate Abdul Majid Khan and others filed the petition. The trial that started on February 7 was stayed by the High Court the same day after an appeal was filed praying for further investigation. Earlier, the trial court had fixed May 3 and 4 for recording of depositions of the 66 prosecution witnesses in the case. The accused in the case are vice-president of the Habiganj district BNP and chief of Zia Smriti O Gobeshona Parishad AKM Abdul Quaiyum, Joynal Abedin Jalal, Zamir Ali, Joynal Abedin Momin, Tajul islam, Shahed Ali, Selim Ahmed and Ayat Ali. Two other accused --Muhibur Rahman and Kajol Miah -- are at large. Five people including Kibria and his nephew Shah Monjurul Huda were killed in a grenade attack on January 27 last year after a public meeting at Baidyerbazar in Habiganj. The other killed are Md Siddique Ali, Abdur Rahim and Abdul Hossain. Advocate Abdul Majid Khan filed two cases with the Habiganj Kotwali Police Station on January 28. CID's Senior ASP Munshi Atiqur Rahman, also the investigation officer (IO), submitted the charge sheet to the court on March 20 the same year.
