Phoenix Building
HC orders Deen Mohammad to surrender Mar 27

The High Court yesterday ordered Deen Mohammad, owner of the Phoenix building that collapsed last month, to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court for bail on March 27.

A division bench of Justice SK Sinha and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury also rejected his petition for an extension of the period to go before his surrender.

Deen Mohammad, also a top official of a private bank, yesterday appeared in person before the High Court bench for bail in a case filed for the collapse incident that left 22 people killed and scores injured on February 25.

On March 12, the High Court ordered him to surrender before the trial court for bail within two weeks. The court asked the CMM's Court in Dhaka to consider the matter of the bail subject to realising compensation for the victims and the government to assess the extent of the damage in the collapse.

Opposing the bail prayer, Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Golam Mohammad Chowdhury Alal submitted that the accused did not comply with the High Court order asking him to surrender before the trial court.

Sub Inspector Khalilur Rahman of Tejgaon Police Station, on February 26, filed the case accusing seven people including Deen Mohammad.

Advocate TH Khan moved for the defendant.
