9 chargesheeted in serial bomb blast case in Barisal


Charges have been framed against nine accused in one of the 12 cases lodged in connection with the serial bomb blasts here on August 17, 2005, court sources said.

The chargesheeted accused are Ziaur Rahman, Abu Yusuf, Golam Morshed Chowdhury Reza, Jalal Arefin, Hafez Saiful Islam, Abu Solaiman Sujan, Jasimuddin, Maruf and Zahid Babu. Of them Zia and Zahid Babu are absconding.

The accused include director, officials and staff of Al Ikram Social Welfare Society.

As an Investigation Officer (IO), sub-inspector (SI) of police Abdur Rab Khan submitted the charge sheet under Sections 3 and 6 of Explosives Act yesterday.

Tight security measures were taken following appearance of the accused in court.

Barisal Kotwali police Sub-inspector (SI) Mashiur Rahman was complainant of the case.

Special Tribunal Judge and First Additional Sessions and District Judge of Barisal A K M Nasiruddin Mahammud rejected the bail prayer of the seven accused present in court and ordered to send them to jail.

The judge ordered for continuation of the trial and fixed the next date of hearing on February 13.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Ferdous Alam appeared on behalf of the state while Advocate Mokhlesur Rahman, Advocate Giasuddin Kabul and Advocate Kazi Munir pleaded for the accused.

Barisal Kotwali police submitted charge sheet against 13 accused including the aforesaid 7 persons in 12 cases lodged in connection with the serial blasts at 18 spots in the city.
