The two convicts, Nasiruddin Jamal and Zillur Bari are brother-in-laws of the victim. Each of them was awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI).

The main accused, Zahirul Alam Kamal, another bother-in-law of the victim, was sentenced to life term RI in absentia.

Immediately after their surrender, District and Sessions Judge Md Safiuddin ordered the authorities concerned to send them to prison.

Court sources said Fawzia Akter Chanpa, 26, an educated housewife and mother of a baby boy was murdered at the house of her industrialist father-in-law on the Fakirbari Road in the city on October 18 in 1989.

During the incident, victim's husband Shahidul Alam was abroad in connection with his business.

After her murder, some human rights organisations launched agitation for punishment to the murderers.

Court sources said the District Judge Court sentenced all the three accused to life term RI. Following an appeal to High Court, two of them were acquitted of charges.

Later, a revision appeal was filed with the Supreme Court. Reviewing the lower court order, the Supreme Court maintained the order of life imprisonment of main accused Kamal and reduced punishment of Jamal and Zillur's to seven years RI.
