24-hr transport strike in Mymensingh

Transport owners and workers began a 24-hour wildcat strike in greater Mymensingh district at 6:00am yesterday to press home their demands, including withdrawal of the bus service of the state-owned BRTC, which is comparatively cheaper.No buses left the terminals of the district town. Although buses from the capital reached Mymensingh in the morning, the operators later suspended the bus services, causing untold suffering to the passengers who did not know about the strike call. The owners and workers are also demanding implementation of the agreements signed by Communications Minister Nazmul Huda on May 19, 2005 and Whip Jahed Ali Chowdhury on May 28, 2005 as well as stopping commercial use of vehicles having private registrations.
