100 injured as villagers clash at Chhatak

At least 100 people were injured, 25 by bullets, in a clash between the inhabitants of two villages in Chhatak upazila over land dispute yesterday morning.Police and villagers said the trouble began at 11:00am when a group of 50 people, led by one Ashik Miah of Kalyanpur village under Dularbazar Union, attacked the villagers of neighbouring Sharifpur under Chhaila Afzalabad Union with firearms in their bid to occupy a disputed land. "In retaliation, some 60 people of Sharifpur village led by one Fayzul Haque swooped on their rivals, leaving at least 100 people from both sides injured," says a firsthand report. Witnesses said the clashing groups used firearms and bottles during the clash that continued for two-hour. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control with the help of other people of the two villages. Of the injured, 25 were admitted to local Kaitak Hospital, 35 to Chhatak Hospital and seven to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
