Tk 60,000cr master plan for environment proposed


The executive body of the National Environment Committee at a meeting yesterday emphasised formulating a 20-year master plan involving Tk 60,000 crore to save the capital from environmental pollution.

The meeting also recommended formation of a high-powered committee comprising officials from the ministries and departments concerned to monitor and recommend environment-related measures.

Chaired by Environment and Forest Minister Tariqul Islam, the meeting also suggested relocating industrial units, including the Tejgaon Industrial Area, outside the capital.

The committee will submit the recommendations to the prime minister.

Agriculture Minister MK Anwar, Shipping Minister Akbar Hossain, Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas, Water Resources Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, State Minister for Planning Anwarul Kabir Talukdar, State Minister for Environment and Forest Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, State Minister for Land Ukil Abdus Sattar and senior officials of different ministries and divisions were present at the meeting.

The meeting discussed fears that the capital Dhaka could become an abandoned city by 2025 due to abnormal growth of the population.

It also discussed insufficient water supply and sewerage facilities, water logging during monsoon, filling of wetlands, grabbing of the rivers by setting up illegal installations and other environmental issues.
