Nurses stage wildcat strike at N'ganj Hospital
Our Correspondent, Narayanganj
Medical services came to a halt for three hours at 200-bed Narayanganj Hospital at Khanpur yesterday as nurses staged a wildcat strike to protest the assault of an on-duty nurse by an agent of a private clinic.Hospital sources said a young woman named Bulu came to the hospital around 12:00pm to see Dr Nasima Akhtar. When she came out of the doctor's chamber, the agent, Halima, forcibly took her to Nova Diagnostic Centre at Kazi Para to carry out an ultra-sonogram test. As Bulu came back to the hospital and showed her report to Dr Nasima, she advised her to get admitted to the hospital. Halima then pressed her again to get admitted to nearby Rose Clinic, which Balu refused. As the agent was dragging Bulu out of the hospital, senior staff nurse Nurunnahar intervened. Then Halima beat up Nurunnahar and snatched a gold chain from her neck, nurses alleged. Immediately after the incident, the nurses and other staff of the hospital went on a strike and staged agitation inside the hospital. As a result, medical services were disrupted, causing sufferings to the patients. The standstill was resolved when hospital Superintendent Dr Syed Sigbat Ullah assured the striking staff of taking action in this regard. The nurses called off the strike and got back to their duties around 3:00pm.
