Cops focus on local partners

The police in their investigation are focusing on the local business partners of Indian rice trader Majid Alam, who was gunned down at Banani on Wednesday."We believe he was killed due to disputes over monetary transactions between his locals partners and company agents here in Dhaka," said Gulshan police. Police produced six arrestees before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate yesterday with a 10-day remand prayer. The arrestees are Majid's business partners Saifur Rahman Khan Arpan, Ahsan Habib, Habib's driver Humaum Kabir, Heritage Inn manager Barkat Ali, hotel employee Ilias Ali Khan and suspect Ehsanul Haque Dipu. Magistrate Abdur Rouf Khan granted five-day remand for each of the arrestees. Investigation officer (IO) and Officer in Charge (OC) Noor-e-Alam of Gulshan Police Station told The Daily Star yesterday that the suspects are being interrogated. "We are yet to come to any conclusion about the killers," he said, "But we believe he was killed due to a business feud," he added. Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue performed the autopsy yesterday and found two bullets in the head and stomach. Officials of Indian High Commission received the body of Majid from the morgue at 2:00pm yesterday. Unknown assailants gunned down Majid in front of the Heritage Inn Guesthouse in Banani at 11:00am when he was getting onto Habib's car.
