More areas go under water in 4 districts
The overall flood situation in Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Sirajganj districts further worsened yesterday, inundating fresh areas.
Hundreds of thousands of marooned people in the districts are passing their days without any assistance.
According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the situation in the northern districts, and Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona may further deteriorate in the next 24 hours. The situation in the low-lying areas in and around Dhaka and Narayangonj is likely to remain unchanged.
In Sirajganj, Eight more unions of six upazilas have gone under water, marooning at least two lakh people. The Jamuna was yesterday flowing 11cm above the danger mark at Sirajganj point.
Standing crops, including aus and aman, seedbed, jute, sugarcane, vegetables and chili on about 5,000 hectares of land are now under floodwater in the district, said local agriculture department.
A total of 89 medical teams have been formed in the district to provide healthcare services for the flood-hit people.
Meanwhile, district disaster management and relief committee at a meeting yesterday gave directives to the upazila administrations to open flood control rooms.
State minister for power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud and high officials of the district administration were present at the meeting.
In Kurigram, the flood situation in the district remained unchanged and the Dharla was flowing 31cm above the danger mark at Ferighat point.
Two bridges at Kishananda Bakshi and Gorak Mondol in Fulbari upazila were washed away by floodwater, snapping road links of Naodanga Union with the upazila headquarters.
More than 200 families of Para village took shelter on different embankments and roads.
Although the Brahmaputra in Gaibandha receded slightly, it was flowing 8cm above the danger mark yesterday. The Korotoa recorded further rise by 28cm and was flowing 44 cm above the danger mark.
The traffic on the Gobindahgonj-Dinajpur road remained suspended, as it went under knee-deep floodwater at Kaiyaganj and Tarafmanu points. Many educational institutions in the district have been submerged by floodwater.
In Nilphamari, hundreds of marooned people are living under the open sky without any food and shelter. The flood-affected people alleged that the local administration did not provide any relief for them.
