Bangladesh, 6 other states chosen for Ashden Award
Bangladesh and six other countries have been chosen for the prestigious "Ashden Award" for sustainable energy when drawn from a record number of entries from across the globe.
The award commends outstanding and innovative projects, which tackle climate change and poverty and improve quality of life by providing desperately-needed renewable energy at a local level.
Projects from Bangladesh, Honduras, India, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines and Rwanda will share the prize money of over 2,00,000 pound sterling as finalists of the global environmental award.
The Bangladesh project by "Prokaushali Sangsad Limited" has been acclaimed for bringing solar-powered lighting and power to poor and remote communities.
The award for sustainable energy was created in 2001 by the Ashden Trust. The award is decided by a panel of judges comprising academics, practitioners, journalists and NGO specialists, all highly experienced in the field of sustainable energy and development.
