Rejoinder and our reply
Additional Secretary of the Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) Fareed Uddin Ahmed has contradicted a report The Daily Star ran on June 2 headlined, "JS body accuses DPHE ex-chief engineer of Tk 13.25 crore graft."

Fareed said the allegation of corruption against him cited in the report is unsubstantiated as the corruption took place long before he had taken over as chief engineer of the DPHE on December 31, 2002.

"It is now clear that the latest step is the work of the vested quarter in my department, which has become active to cause harm [to] and [defame] me from the day I took over as chief engineer of the department," he added.

Our Reply
The Daily Star report had its base on a parliamentary sub-committee report submitted to the parliamentary standing committee on local government and rural development ministry, which accused Fareed of committing graft to the tune of Tk 13.25 crore.
