Laws to be amended to ensure speedy justice
Moudud tells workshop

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday said the government will amend the exiting civil laws with a view to ensuring speedy justice at affordable price. "Justice cannot be ensured if a case takes five to ten years for its disposal," he added. The law minister was speaking at a workshop on 'The proposed amendment to Code of Civil Procedure 1908 and Civil Courts Act 1887' at the Law Administration Training Institute in the city. He said the government's discussion with the stakeholders before the introduction of a law is a unique example of participatory democracy," he said. Moudud said the government does not avoid its responsibilities after enacting a new law, rather it continues its monitoring on the practical implementation of that law. He called upon the lawyers and judges to build up a pro-people mindset in the their profession. "The lawyers and judges should practice the exiting laws in such a way as if people can get justice within a short period," he said, adding there will be no need to introduce any new law or amendment the existing one if lawyers and judges were more careful about the well-being of the people. State Minister for law Muhammad Shahjahan Omar said amendment to civil laws will be brought aiming to provide justice to common people quickly. Additional Secretary of the ministry Kazi Habibul Awal, and Joint Secretary Shahidul Hoque also spoke at the inaugural secession of the workshop. Lawyers, judges, presidents and general secretaries of bar associations from different districts took part in the workshop.
