Govt plans to make Nasir winner thru' vote frauds: Hasina
UNB, Dhaka
Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said most people in Chittagong want to see ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury re-elected in tomorrow's mayoral polls, but the alliance government wants to snatch the poll verdict."The alliance government has drawn up plans to make Mir Nasir the winner in the election through vote frauds," she told a prize-giving ceremony of Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the city. The AL chief said, "Voting is the constitutional right of a citizen, but the government seems to violate this right. Thirteen centres in the Chittagong City Corporation have been relocated just ahead of the election." Turning to Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Hasina said they are killing people without trial in the name of curbing terrorism, but there has been no improvement in the law and order situation despite the extra-judicial killing. "Are the hands of Rab longer than the court?" she questioned. "If Rab is neutral in its action against the terrorists then why did they fail to arrest the culprits behind the August 21 grenade attacks on Awami League rally?" she wanted to know. "The government has created Rab to eliminate the opposition leaders and workers to achieve its political goal," the AL leader observed. About the killing of Ahsanullah Master MP, she said the court has punished some of the criminals, but the main conspirators still remained out of touch. "Everyone knows the conspiracy was hatched at Hawa Bhaban," AL chief said. Hasina also accused the alliance government of violating human rights, promoting fundamentalism, and indulging in corruption. "An anarchic situation is now prevailing in the country. Everybody is now concerned about his or her security as extra-judicial killing, rape, repression and abduction have become the order of the day," the AL chief said. Referring to the recent killing of AL activist Mafidul Islam Dudu Mia in 'crossfire' in the city's Lalbagh area, the opposition leader said, "The ruling party MP from Lalbag is a terrorist, but Rab cannot arrest him." Hasina urged the people to get united to oust the alliance regime to establish a people's government through a credible election. The function was also addressed by former National University VC Prof Durgadas Bhattacharya, Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela Chief Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and its General Secretary Shireen Akhter. Earlier, Sheikh Hasina distributed prizes among the winners.
