CCC Polls
Candidate hurt in 'Jamaat rival's' attack

A pro-BNP rebel ward commissioner candidate in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls suffered injuries in an attack allegedly led by his Jamaat-e-Islami-backed rival on Friday.

Sabuktagin Siddiquee Mokki, convenor of city unit Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal, came under attack at around 11:45pm in Chittagong College area near his house.

He is contesting the CCC polls from ward No 16 in Chawk Bazar.

Witnesses said about 15 people led by Jamaat candidate Reazul Anwar Chowdhury Sintu attacked Mokki when he was on an election campaign.

They stabbed him in his hand, back, waist and below the right eye and beat him up with sticks and cricket stumps, they added.

Mokki was rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), and doctors said his condition is improving.

"Sintu led the attack and first hit me by a stump. As I fell on the road, other Jamaat-Shibir activists started beating me up," Mokki told reporters at the CMCH yesterday.

He said Sintu had earlier threatened him not to contest the election and asked him to quit when he braved the threats.

Mokki said he will file a complaint with the Election Commission and a case against Sintu.

Returning Officer Golam Quddus told The Daily Star yesterday afternoon that he did not receive a complaint from Mokki.

When contacted, Sintu rejected his involvement in the attack and said sensing defeat in the polls, Mokki is raising falls allegations against him.
