Nothing beyond constitution will be allowed
Says Khaleda about caretaker govt

Prime Minister (PM) Khaleda Zia yesterday said people will not accept the Opposition's caretaker government issue, because nothing outside the constitution will be allowed.

She said free and fair election will be held in due course and according to the provisions of the constitution and that the BNP will win elections each time a free and fair election is held.

Addressing a big public meeting at Gangni football field in the afternoon, the prime minister, also chairperson of the ruling BNP, urged the people to vote for her party's election symbol sheaf of paddy for the welfare of the people and development and stability of the country.

As the people no more respond to or support hartals, the Opposition is coming up with the settled caretaker government issue to divert people's attention, she said.

She said whenever BNP was voted to power, the country moved forward with massive development activities in all sectors, including education, health, economy and investment.

The PM said Bangladesh's economy is now at the best position of all times and stressed the need for continuity of the government to maintain the momentum of development going on across the country.

Khaleda called upon the people to join the forward march following her government's road map of development aimed at making the country self-sufficient in all sectors and materialise the dream of independence.

She accused the Opposition of harbouring terrorists and asserted that no political leaders and elements are being arrested in the name of terrorists.

"Those who are involved in terrorism, snatching, extortion and killing are being arrested and given punishment lawfully," she said.

Rapid Action Battalion, formed to curb terrorism and ensure peace and security of the people, is doing its job well, Khaleda said.

They (Opposition) are creating chaos and lawlessness in the country and spreading false propaganda abroad to tarnish the country's image, she said.

She said Bangladesh is a liberal democratic and moderate country where people of all faiths are living in harmony and performing their religious activities and festivals peacefully.

Environment Minister Tatiqul Islam, PM's Political Secretary Harris Chowdhury, State Minister for Public Works Alamgir Kabir, Deputy Minister of Industries Abdus Salam Pintu who is also minister in charge Meherpur district, BNP leader Shamsun Nahar Khawja Ahsanullah, local MP Mohamamd Abdul Gani, Masud Arun MP, Prof Shaidul Islam MP, Mehidi Ahmed Rumi MP and Mohammad Suhrabuddin MP, among others, addressed the meeting presided over by Gangni upazila BNP President Mohammad Abdullah.
