Garment worker with burn injuries dies

A woman severely burnt by her husband on November 26 died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) yesterday after struggling for eight days.

Garment worker Alo Begum, 22, the second wife of Abdul Majid Miah of 207/3/3 East Rasulbagh in Lalbagh said her husband poured kerosene and set fire on her when she was preparing to go to her work.

Alo married Majid in July 2003 but learnt about his first marriage last July, she told reporters.

Parvin Begum, his first wife, and some of her relatives forced Majid, an employee in a sweetmeat shop, to live with her, neglecting the second wife, Alo alleged.

"He (Majid) came to my house at 10:00pm on November 25 and promised to stay with me, but he set fire on me the following morning," the victim said.

Alo's mother Ayesha Begum filed a case with Lalbagh Police Station on November 27 and Lalbagh police arrested Parvin from her Hosni Dalan residence on Tuesday.

Majid has been absconding since the incident.
