AL threatens hartal

Awami League (AL) leader Mohammad Nasim yesterday said they would go for a series of hartals if the BNP-Jamaat coalition tries to resist the formation of December 11 No-confidence Human Wall from Teknaf to Tentulia to oust the government. He was addressing a rally organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student front of AL, in front of its central office in the city yesterday. AL Joint Secretary Obaidul Kader said the alliance government killed 30,000 people across the country in last three years. He said they would launch further agitation against the government after December 11. AL Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan said the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) was formed without any legal basis. He asked the BCL leaders and activists to make no-confidence human wall programme a success. The metropolitan south and north units of the BCL organised the protest rally demanding immediate release of its central Joint Secretary Mazhar Anam and protesting the killing of central Assistant Library Secretary Mohim Uddin Mohim by Rab. They threatened to go for tougher agitation if Mazhar Anam is not released immediately. Presided over by BCL metropolitan north unit President Ishaque Miah, the rally was also addressed by its President Liaqat Sikder, General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu, Saifuzzaman Shekhor, Khalilur Rahman and Golam Sarwar Kabir.
