Benson & Hedges Star Search '04 concludes
Rajshahi sweeps away most statuettes
Faizul Khan Tanim
The Bangladesh music industry held yet another star-studded Benson & Hedges Star Search 2004. Like preceding years, this was the ultimate platform for musicians from all around the country to showcase their talent. Hotel Sheraton's Winter Garden along with the organisers hosted this year's event on November 29. Most bands from the finale did not reveal any creative compositions; rather they were a repetition of what has been going on in the music scene from the last era. Especially the Dhaka-based groups could have patterned more polished compositions after the musical revolution that has been going on in the city's local underground. Nonetheless, a few of the artistes came from outside Dhaka and brought innovative vibes in their tunes. Edul Bashar, a solo performer from Rajshahi was very flamboyant on stage. His lyrics and composition kept the audiences on their feet bringing nostalgic moments from Ferdous Wahid singing Mamonia. Although one of his lyrics was a bit cheesy, his style and composition were unique. The audiences echoed a similar opinion on him--he would do wonder singing parody songs, bringing out the lighter side of life. Another band, Convert from Rajshahi, was extremely innovative with their vibes of Jibon-mukhi Bangla gaan in their composition. Starting from the sweet intro, delightful harmony of vocals, good keyboard application, their mellow rock songs were fresh and soothing giving rise to two very creatively done songs. The 16 finalists comprised nine bands--Ogni (Chittagong), And 4 (Chittagong), Amra (Dhaka), War 'N' Base (Dhaka), Pothik (Khulna), Clairvoyance (Khulna), Salvation (Rajshahi), Shoreyo (Rajshahi) and Convert (Rajshahi). The seven solo performers were Bashiruzzaman (Chittagong), Tanjina Chowdhury (Chittagong), Mitra Kabir (Dhaka), Samira Jubeidi Himika (Dhaka), M Hasan Taimum Wahab Sainik (Dhaka), Sabiha Sultana Shormi (Khulna) and Edul Bashar (Rajshahi). After the exciting jamming session of the judges at the dawn of the event, it was a fulfilling experience to see the most exciting part of the evening--the prize distribution. The glowing statuettes at the middle of the stage raised heartbeats of all the musicians and audiences as the announcer called out the lucky names. The judges, along with head of marketing Rashed Ahmed, acting managing director Golam Mainuddin and senior brand manager, premium brands Afzal Mahboob of British American Tobacco Bangladesh awarded the winners. Shakila Zafar presented the Best Vocalist award to the vocals of band Convert while Naquib Khan announced the keyboard man of band War 'N' Base as the Best Keyboardist. Partha Barua and Mainuddin Ahmed presented Best Guitarist to the guitarist of band Amra and Best Composition to the band Convert. Foad Naser Babu presented Best Percussionist to the drummer of Salvation band and Best Lyricist award to Taimum Wahab Shoinik. Manam Ahmed presented Best Bassist to the Salvation bassist while Syed Abdul Hadi presented Best Solo award to Mitra Kabir. Finally Ayub Bachchu gave away the long-anticipated Best Band award to Salvation.
