Leisure-hour society

Why we are still a leisure-hour society, after the valiant sacrifices in 1971? We are still adda-baaz and phaki-baaz, looking for excuses all the time for personal gains. Take the long Eid holidays for six days. Where to deposit safely Tk 1,000 crore earned during Eid shopping, while the banks are closed? The robbers know of the situation.

Before and after the official Eid holidays, we sneak off earlier, and return late. The society does not punish such recalcitrant members , as it has turned into a culture, and the political masters do not even point it out!

There is a better image of the experts working abroad; but there are crook employment agencies in Bangladesh sending manpower to other countries. The authorities have identified the problems, and are taking slow and painless measures! There are examples in other sectors of the society of sloth and malpractice. We are number one in the TI list! Our reforms move at such a leisurely pace, like the jowar bhata of our 500 rivers and canals.

Notice the audacity of leaders of the society haranguing the public on this and that! Senior public officials should wear burqa for non-transparency. We are impressed by the physical aspects of social styles and postures, but our hearts have no windows for light coming in or going out.

The majority of the newly emerged nations have similar problems, but the superpower is not interested in moral rearmament

Look at our handloom dresses. Nothing formal for the office. All leisure hour long kurta and extra long sleeves hiding the fingers--the zamindari touch!

Perhaps history betrayed us: 200 years of divide and rule policy of the Raj has contaminated our DNA. Why become a politician? Too tough a job!
