2 brothers get death

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced two brothers to death and six others to life term imprisonment for killing a youth in Munshiganj district in 2002.

The convicts with death are Nirmal Bachhar and Chandan Bachhar while Rabi Bachhar, Pran Krishna Bachhar, Madhu Sarker, Maghu Sarker, Paritosh Sarker and Provash Sarker were jailed for life.

Of them, Nirmal was tried in absentia and his punishment will be effective from the date of his arrest or surrender, the judge said.

Judge AR Masud of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 gave the verdict in presence of other convicts at a jam-packed courtroom.

According to the prosecution, Palash Bachhar, 25, was killed over a land dispute on April 16 in 2002. His father Makhan Bachhar filed a case with Srinagar police station against two of his nephews -- Nirmal and Chandan -- and eight others.
