Indian move for Barak river dam in Manipur protested
Rally calls for govt step

Speakers at a big rally here on Saturday protested an Indian move to create a massive embankment on the Barak river at Tipaimukh point in Manipur state.

The protest rally was held in the city point area under the chairmanship of Shahjalal (RA) Samaj Kalyan Parishad President Syed Mobnu. Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, also president of city Awami League was present as chief guest.

During his address, the city mayor said the demand is not a political demand, rather a common people's demand. People of all parties and social organisations should join the agitation for the very existence of Sylhet region, he added.

Other speakers asked the government to compel the Indian government to stop building the 'death trap'.

They reminded the large gathering that Indian government had tried to implement the huge project a few years back, but could not proceed further in face of strong resistance of people of Manipur and Assam as well as Bangladesh.

The rally was addressed, among others, by Nabiganj Pourashava Chairman Tofazzal Islam Chow-dhury, Sohol Al-Razi, Shoeb Ahmed, Sirajul Islam and Kutub Uddin Wasim.

Speakers also demanded of the government to take steps for dredging all the rivers in greater Sylhet region.

The rally was told that similar protest rallies will be held in all the districts of the division in near future.
