'Dispute' between male, female commissioners
Meeting with Sylhet Mayor produces no result
Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
A meeting on Monday between female ward commissioners and Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran on the 'dispute' between male and female commissioners ended without any positive outcome. After the meeting, the Mayor however said, "I will sit soon with male and female colleagues to settle the misunderstanding". But some of the female commissioners said the Mayor did not give importance to their legitimate demands. "He had a time killing attitude.", one of them said. Female commissioners, who were elected to reserved seats for women, had been alleging discrimination from their male colleagues in SCC activities. As the female commissioners held meetings to press the Mayor as well as the government to get their equal share in Activities, the male commissioners became annoyed. Some female commissioners even alleged that they were given threats in last one week for demanding their share in activities. Eight out of the nine female commissioners of SCC filed two GDs (general diary) with Sylhet Kotwali thana Saturday afternoon, seeking 'personal security'. Papiya chowdhury, Rokshana Khatun, Kohinoor Yasmin Zharna, Amena Begum Rumi, Nadira Begum, Saleha Kabir Shepi and Advocate Rokshana Begum Shah-naj filed a joint GD. Zebunnahar Shirin filed another GD. In the GDs, they alleged misbehaviour and telephonic threats by male commissioners.
