RU students ransack edn board office
Students of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday ransacked Rajshahi Education Board office in Laxmipur in the city on charges of harbouring brokers and taking bribes.
About 100 students in four university buses went to the board office at noon to protest assault on Ru students Anu and Apple by brokers following a wrangle over receiving testimonials.
They stormed into the office throwing brickbats and vandalised furniture, doors and windows. At this stage, the activities at the office stopped, as most of the workers and employees escaped. The protesters also beat up Rony, a broker of the office.
The students led by Mustahidur Rahman also submitted a memorandum carrying a six-point demand to REB Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam. The demands include freeing REB of brokers, putting an end to bribery, forming of a mobile team to check public harassment and opening an information centre.
Prof Nazrul told reporters that mobile teams will start working tomorrow.
