Two killed in road crash
Two passengers including a woman were killed and twenty others injured, two of them critically, in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Mirer Sarai last evening.
Protesting the accident, reportedly blamed on extortion by a traffic sergeant, local people barricaded the highway for over an hour and disrupted traffic movement.
The accident occurred between a Dhaka-bound S Alam Paribahan coach and a truck at Chinki Astana at around 6:00pm when Traffic Sergeant Kabir, in his desperate attempt to stop the truck to collect toll, came on the highway blocking the way of the running vehicles, sources alleged.
The 60-year-old truck driver and a female passenger of the coach died on the spot while at least twenty others were injured among which Ibrahim and Mostafa were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Local people in an instant protest barricaded the alternative road at Zorargonj when the highway remained blocked by the damaged vehicles. Mob also chased the traffic sergeant who was later rescued by local journalists.
The barricade was removed after Assistant Police Super of Mirer Sarai circle Mozahidul Islam assured the mob of measures against the traffic sergeant.
