Onslaught of diarrhoea Pneumonia continues

2 more die, about 4000 attacked

The spread of diarrhoea and pneumonia lingers, as two died and 3,876 others, including 618 children, fell ill with the diseases in the last 24 hours.

Diarrhoea situation got worse as thousands of people returned from flood centres began drinking contaminated water at their makeshift houses. Fluctuations in weather are responsible for the outbreak of pneumonia, mostly among children, doctors treating the affected observed.

The health directorate yesterday said two people died of and 3,258 were affected by diarrhoea in the last 24 hours. As many as 618 children also were ill with pneumonia during this time.

Since June, 77 people died of diarrhoea and about 1.98 lakh were affected, while 136 children died of pneumonia and 24,402 contracted the disease, said reports of the health directorate.

However, these figures are half the actual number of sufferers, various NGOs and other social development organisations working for post-flood rehabilitation have claimed. At least 250 people died of diarrhoea alone, they said.

The health directorate also said dysentery, an infection of the intestine, is also spreading in the flood-hit areas.

"We have no idea why so many people are falling ill with dysentery. It seems, from the patients' complaints, that people are taking stale food," said a doctor in Brahmanbaria.

Skin and eye diseases are also widespread in the flood-affected areas. In all, 59,935 people have been diagnosed as having these diseases at various union health centres and temporary health camps.
