'Fanaticism pushing world into danger'

Muslims should follow the humanistic teachings of Islam, not the extremist line of the militant outfits spreading throughout the world, speakers said at a discussion yesterday. Religious fanaticism is pushing the world into great danger, they said. Writer Shahriar Kabir, general secretary of the South Asian People's Union against Fundamentalism & Communalism, recounted his experience on his recent visit to Tatarstan at the discussion held at the Russian Cultural Centre. Militant Islamist outfits such as Harkatul Jihad have been spreading their tentacles into Bangladesh and other countries of South Asia while the situation in Tatarstan is totally different, Shahriar said. "In Tatarstan, Islam is defined by its humanistic teachings," he added. Professor Kabir Chowdhury said the extremists and fundamentalists use religion as a weapon to cling to power. Russian Ambassador Oleg S Malignov also spoke at the discussion. Later, a video film on Shahriar's visit to Tatarstan was screened.
