Govt committed to repeal of Pota, says Pranab

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre is committed to the repeal of Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) which was very much part of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the ruling alliance, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said yesterday.

"There is no timeframe for the repeal of Pota and it will be done after getting the approval of Parliament," he told reporters at the airport here this morning.

Replying to a question, Mukherjee, here to participate in the marriage function of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi's grand-daughter, said Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar had recently met him and made certain proposals and they would be considered by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"Whatever proposals, they would be looked into and a decision taken later," he said.
