'Americans, French want Bush out'

A majority of French and 51 percent of Americans are opposed to US President George W. Bush winning another four years in the White House, according to an opinion poll in French Sunday newspaper Journal de Dimanche.

Eighty four percent of French people questioned hope Bush will lose the US presidential election in November, as do 51 percent of their US counterparts, according to the Ipsos poll, which described itself as "a comparative study of opinions on either side of the Atlantic".

Sixty eight percent of French said they were "absolutely opposed" to Bush being re-elected, as did 42 percent of Americans.

The poll found the French and Americans, who in the main hold overwhelmingly opposing views about the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq, saw themselves as "sometimes faithful allies". This view was held by 64 percent of French interviewees and 58 percent of their US counterparts.

It said 45 percent of French people believed the two nations were "fairly close", as did 38 percent of US citizens questioned.
