Baten, who worked at the Criminal Investigation Department, was not produced before the court and was sent to Dhaka Central Jail straight from the court lock-up where he was taken at 3:00pm on expiry of his one-day remand.

In the forwarding letter to Metropolitan Magistrate Noni Gopal Biswas, police said they gathered information about Baten's source of money he offered in bribe to Babar to cancel his transfer order. Police also urged the court to send him into jail custody until the investigation ends.

Defence lawyers submitted a bail petition to the court saying Baten was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him. They appealed for his release on bail as they said he was sick.

The magistrate rejected the bail prayer.

The home ministry says Baten went to meet the state minister at his office on Thursday to request cancellation of an order of his transfer to Khagrachhari.

A police headquarters press release, issued the same day, says the minister informed Home Secretary Omar Farooq and Inspector General of Police Shahudul Haque about the alleged offer of bribe. Baten was handed over to Ramna Police Station after arrest.
