Launch sinks in Meghna, 15 feared dead

Fifteen passengers including the machine man are feared dead in a launch capsize in the Meghna near Mirzakalu jetty in Bhola yesterday morning. Mirzakalu-bound MV Sahbazpur from Char Alekazander in Noakhali sank with 150 passengers due to a twister. Local trawlers and fishing boats immediately rescued 135 passengers, while at least 15 people are still missing, witnesses said. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) had earlier restricted launch traffic on this route from March 15 to October 15 this year. But Selim Mia of Bhola, owner of Sahbazpur, was running the launch violating the prohibition. Local divers have located the sunken launch.
